Upcycling & ice dying in the Finger Lakes

My name is Melissa Durkop, I am a Seneca Falls native who has fallen in love with Rochester. Being creative is a important part of my identity. When I was a teenager, I planned to be an art teacher. I have a degree in Fine Arts and Design, as well as Nonprofit Management. I started a small business in 2020, Jeanie June Designs to showcase my work as a fiber artist.
Geodes started developing throughout my textile work and quickly I became obsessed with manipulating the design and blending colors. Every geode is unique. You have to crack one open to expose the patterns, similar to unwrapping dyed fabric.
Multi media comes naturally to me, and I knew I wanted to find new ways to highlight the pieces I was making. Layering color on dyed fabric is just the start. I look forward to adding a 3D aspect to my pieces in the future.
